LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)

A LEEP is a procedure that can be performed either in the office or as outpatient surgery. It is used to both confirm the diagnosis of dysplasia as well as treat it. The LEEP safely removes the abnormal tissue from your cervix.

Procedure

  • Local anesthesia will be applied to the cervix.
  • A Loop will be used to remove a portion of the cervix.
  • The tissue will be sent to pathology for diagnosis.
  • You may feel a slight tingling or some lower abdominal cramping.
  • A medicated paste (monsel) may be put on the cervix to stop bleeding. This solution will turn black when it mixes with blood.
  • You will have a moderate to heavy discharge for the next 1 to 2 weeks.

Complications

  • Bleeding or serious bleeding requiring observation, stitches or transfusion is very rare.
  • Infection
  • Some scarring of the cervix may occur.

Post Procedure Care

  • Vaginal discharge is expected as well as light bleeding.
  • Healing of the cervix should take about a month.
  • Do not use tampons or have intercourse until cleared by your doctor at your post op visit.
  • You may take Tylenol or Motrin for discomfort.

Call the office if you experience:

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding
  • Fever, Chills
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Foul smelling vaginal discharge
